Computer Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the discipline of matching the task to the worker using the most appropriate equipment to optimise human well-being and overall performance
For desk workers an understanding of some basic ergonomic principles will help create a happier, healthier workplace.
- Adjust your chair Understand the functions of the levers under your chair. You should have seat and back angle as well as height adjustment. Ensure you have the correct size seat. There should be 4 - 6 cm clearance between the back of the knee and the seat pan. A locking back will ensure your lumbar support is at the correct height for individual use.
- Elbows above desk For using either fixed height desks or drop down keyboards this is an easy rule to remember for a safe typing position.
- Keyboard If you don’t use the numeric pad on your keyboard, eliminate potential mousing injuries by using a smaller keyboard to move the mouse closer.
A-Shape or Split keyboards help to eliminate ulnar deviation by maintaining straight wrists. Tilting the back of your keyboard up is a cause of wrist extension so ideally it should be placed as flat as possible or on a negative (downward) slope.
- Ergonomic Mouses are available in Vertical, Bilateral and Alternative styles. Vertical mouses eliminate rotation (pronation) of the forearm. Bilateral Mouses allow the user to alternate the workload between different arms, hands and fingers. There are other alternatives for people with high mousing levels.
- Data should be inline between the keyboard and monitor and there are a number of products to accommodate those who also require a document holder for writing.
- Flat panel monitors allow for easy angle, height and depth adjustment when mounted on a Monitor Arm. As our bodies tire towards the end of the day we compensate by leaning forward, creating postural problems for the neck and back. The monitor arm provides the solution through its easy adjustment.
- Laptops violate ergonomic principles as the monitor and keyboard can not be separated. If you use a Laptop as your primary computer use an external mouse and keyboard in conjunction with a laptop stand or docking station.
- Sit/Stand Desks or Electric Height Adjustable Workstations can be modified to suit different work areas with alternative tops and custom sizes.
Products that may be of assistance in the aged care field include the lightweight collapsible trolleys with a weight capacity of 60kg. An Ergonomic Leg Rest is the most mobile solution for leg elevation. This can be either to enhance the clients comfort or to assist the carer.
If you would like to learn more about ergonomic products and solutions we invite you to join the Ergonomic Interest Group (EIG) for regular newsletters and free events that allow members to get hands on with the latest in ergonomic equipment. Our next event is EIG Melbourne on 7th May.
